Widening and aligning a 130-year-old multiple-arch bridge
This historic structure needed special treatment to maintain its appearance in accordance with its Historic Places Trust Category 1 status.
This historic 130-year-old multiple-arch bridge needed widening and vertical alignment. Its status as a Historic Places Trust Category1 structure meant that its appearance had to be maintained. Opus also had to address some inherent structural weaknesses.
We came up with the novel approach of stripping the bridge down to its arches, strengthening and widening it with reinforced concrete, then reinstating the original stonework.
This work won several awards – testimony to the creativity, quality and practicality of the design.
