Helping create a modern space for an iconic global brand in Auckland’s CBD.

The flagship New Zealand Topshop Topman store in Queen Street, Auckland required a modern, light-filled fit out which Opus helped deliver, through expert structural services.

The first ever New Zealand Topshop Topman store is located on Queen Street, in Auckland’s CBD. Taking over an existing building, extensive structural services were required to enable a high quality fit out suitable for this world famous brand.

A two-level space encompassing 1,400m2, we collaborated with multiple architects to provide a complete solution in line with the global Topshop Topman stores and their brand.

Our role

Opus provided structural services for the fit out, which included:

  • A new canopy to replace the existing.
  • Slab openings and supports for a new escalator.
  • Construction of new mezzanine floor.
  • Internal feature staircase.
  • Shop frontage, including a new store entry at the corner of Queen and Victoria Street.

We also coordinated with mechanical and audio services to include lighting in the canopy, plus provide allowance for the extensive services required for the fit out, such as:

  • Upgraded fire system.
  • Audio and digital systems.
  • Relocated ducting.
  • Mechanical systems.

The result

Opus was involved throughout the entire process, from feasibility study to construction services. We had historical knowledge of the previous heavy timber canopy (which was originally designed by Opus). This, combined with our ability to utilise our existing connections, meant we were able to create a new lightweight steel and glass canopy.

Thanks to this modern and open canopy, the new store has a major positive impact on the street corner.

We also undertook a wind study to investigate the effect of the new canopy on wind flows along the pavement. This ensured there would be no negative impacts on pedestrians.

Key challenge and solution

The original drawings did not always reflect the site conditions but working closely with the contractor, we were able to continue the construction works and minimise risks without delaying the programme’s finish date.
