Once complete, the Star Mountain Plaza will be a landmark project for Papua New Guinea. Designed for a mix of uses, the Star Mountain Plaza will be a place for both locals and visitors to work, live, stay, shop and dine. Celebrating the local cultural identity, the central vision of the project, is reflected in the design by Ignite Architects.
The Plaza is a three-stage development with the first stage seeing the construction of a five-star Hilton Hotel, complete with two restaurants and bars, an outdoor pool and event spaces. It also includes a 4,000m2 multi-level convention and performing arts centre, the first of its kind in Papua New Guinea.
In stage two we will provide our structural engineering services expertise for a 19-storey building complete with a three-storey podium for retail premises, car parking, bars and restaurants with a 16-storey residential tower rising above it. Our involvement also includes all site civil works.
By using a combination of reinforced concrete sheer walls and concentrically braced steel frames, our structural design ensures a robust building. Braced steel frames in the north and south of the tower will significantly reduce the impact of wind and seismic activity on the building. Because the building is founded on rock, we adopted shallow foundations as well as rock anchors to balance seismic loading.
The third and final stage of the iconic project will see a new hotel added, alongside additional retail, commercial and office space.
