Better access road makes way for Spring Creek mine expansion

Opus helped to improve the access road for the expansion of the Spring Creek mine.

Opus provided early designs and costings for an improved access road for the expansion of the Spring Creek Mine.

Solid Energy was assessing the cost of an 8km road to access a ventilation shaft proposed as part of the expansion of the underground mine.

The site was in mountainous terrain with only partial 4WD access to the site. Our Greymouth team was able to bring considerable roading design, construction and maintenance experience to this project, and our local presence meant we could respond quickly and cost-effectively.

The team identified that locally available mobile rock crushing equipment could be used to construct the road. This would enable the client to recycle existing road surface and create construction aggregate from other site sources, rather than import new material. This approach allows for significant construction cost savings and environmental benefits.
