One of the country’s largest urban renewal projects

This project in the Wynyard Quarter is one of New Zealand’s largest urban renewal projects, with sustainability central to the development’s design and integration.

This high profile urban development aims to integrate sustainability into design, development and operation of each of the precincts that form the Wynyard Quarter.

Developing this area in a more sustainable way meant overcoming a number of challenges, including converting an industrial landscape on reclaimed land into a sustainable urban precinct within budgets more appropriate to a greenfield site.

The Daldy Street and Halsey Street Redevelopment is a key project in the renewal of the Wynyard Quarter. Daldy Street, Halsey Street and Daldy Street Linear Park were used as vehicles for delivering on sustainability objectives from both technical and urban design perspectives.

The project illustrates how careful civil and urban design can transform roading infrastructure into positive features where city life is played out and people can enjoy walking, cycling and shopping.

Opus provided civil design services for pipe reticulation, roading and lighting. A major challenge has been integrating a stormwater management system while managing the engineering hurdles of proximity to tidal influences, contaminated soils and flat terrain. Conventional approaches to stormwater design weren’t possible so we developed some creative and innovative solutions to overcome these challenges.

Sustainability features include stormwater treatment through rain gardens and swales, e-lighting for streets, reuse of site concrete, rainwater recollection, provision for energy generation, and excellent pedestrian and cycle-ways. 

This project more than delivers on the project’s quadruple bottom line goals around environment and resources, connectedness, sense of place, community, urban environment and economic vitality. And it highlights how the Opus engineering team can bring added value by creating innovative, affordable, environmentally sensitive and sustainable solutions as part of a multi-disciplinary project team.
