Global infrastructure consultancy, Opus International Consultants, has appointed Dr David Prentice to lead its UK operations. In the UK, Opus employs 360 staff in 17 offices, which are spread throughout the country. The company also has 64 offices in Australia, Canada and New Zealand, employing in total 2563 people. Its head office is located in Wellington, New Zealand.

Dr Prentice began his career with an engineering consultancy in the UK. After completing his PhD in Engineering at Edinburgh University, he moved to New Zealand and took up a position with Opus, where he worked in a number of roles before being appointed General Manager Business Development in April 2006. His key responsibilities in this role included developing global strategic plans for the development of the business, marketing and client management.

In taking up his new position as UK Director, following the retirement of the former Director, Trevor Crawley, Dr Prentice says he will be focussing in the short term on a period of consolidation to ensure the company maintains its strong position in the UK marketplace. He says he is cautiously optimistic about the future outlook despite the economic downturn being experienced in the country.

“We are in a relatively fortunate position here in the UK despite the economic downturn,” says Dr Prentice. “Because we are a global business, we are able to leverage off the skills and experience of our people around the world who have extensive experience in a wide range of service capabilities. This in-depth experience, coupled with the skills and local knowledge of our people here, gives us a marketing edge particularly in transportation asset management - an area of expertise for which we are recognised throughout the world.”

This expertise was recognised in 2006, when Opus was awarded the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Supreme Exporter of the Year Award for exporting its knowledge and expertise to its other countries of operation. In the UK the company recently also won the New Civil Engineer (NCE) Award for “Best for Fun at Work.”

Opus has been involved with a number of recent flagship projects in the UK. These have included the civil, structural and geotechnical engineering design for the ‘BREEAM Rated’ Environment Centre in Wales, the transportation engineering for the iconic Curve Theatre in Leicester and London’s largest shopping centre in White City, London. The company also provided the structural engineering for the multi-award winning Oxley Woods development in Milton Keynes.

“As we move to consolidate our business in the UK, we will also be looking to increase our client profile,” says Dr Prentice. “While our strength, profile and capability have grown significantly over the last several years in the UK, we are moving to expand on this and provide services to a wider range of potential clients. We are optimistic that we will come through the immediate economic downturn in a strong position.”

Dr Prentice took up his new position in early February and will be located at the Bristol office of Opus.
