Opus International Consultants (Opus) and Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) have won a Silver Award at the recent Association of Consulting Engineers of New Zealand (ACENZ) Awards for their work on the Coromandel Eastern Seaboard Wastewater Treatment Plants project.
The project, for which Opus was the Project Manager and SKM was the principal designer (contracted by the project constructor, Downer EDi Works), was a winner at the Innovate New Zealand 2009 Awards of Excellence dinner that was held in Queenstown on Saturday 25th July 2009.
The $84 million project involved providing additional wastewater treatment and disposal capacity at the resort towns of Whangamata, Whitianga and Pauanui/Tairua. The ES3 Project, as it became known, was the Thames Coromandel District Council’s largest single project and was, at the time, New Zealand’s largest wastewater project.
“We are delighted to be recognised at these prestigious awards,” said Opus Chief Executive, Dr Kevin Thompson. “It is a great reward for the project team who were committed to delivering an innovative state-of-the-art solution, on time and to a budget for the three new infrastructure assets.”
The key objectives of the project were to provide for future growth of the peninsula and to significantly improve the quality of wastewater effluent to meet the expectations of the local communities particularly in regard to the protection of waterways, estuaries and harbours that are so popular for recreation and fishing. The centrepiece of the project was a $52 million component to deliver three new, near identical plants under a single design/build/operate contract.
“The project team has provided our client with an innovative, robust and economical solution to meet the long term needs of the district council and the community it serves,” said SKM Regional Manager, Dr Michael Shirley.
