The Waikato Expressway is a NZ$1 billion plus project that will increase journey reliability, provide a safer route and reduce travel time between Auckland and Cambridge by 20 minutes, driving inter-regional and national economic growth and productivity.

Opus were engaged by the NZ Transport Agency to provide Professional Services to complete the Investigation and Reporting Phase and the Specimen Design and Project Documentation Phase through to tender award, for the Tamahere to Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway.

The concept for this section of the Waikato Expressway was to upgrade a heavily trafficked two-lane section of State Highway 1 (4 kilometre length) to a four-lane divided expressway, and development of a 12 kilometre long section of the expressway bypassing the township of Cambridge on a greenfields route – total expressway length of 16 kilometres.  The project incorporates three interchanges, one major 220 metre long and 40 metre high viaduct, plus seven other bridges.
