Newmarket Rail Station, New Zealand

Country: New Zealand
Key Area: Buildings
Services: Architecture

Opus Architecture is providing a full architectural design and management service for this high-profile public transport development for the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA). The project entails the analysis of site opportunities and constraints leading to the revision of the original Station Concept Plan, including urban design assessment, Detailed Design of platform finishes, furniture, canopies, north and south concourses, vertical transportation and interfaces with the surrounding urban context and public facilities.

The Newmarket Rail Station upgrade is a complex project involving numerous stakeholders, a very constrained urban environment with limited access and very tight demands of budget and timing. The station project is driven by the triple tracking of the section of the two rail networks at Newmarket to allow the direct through routing of trains both north-south and to the west. It is anticipated that Newmarket Rail Station will become the second busiest rail node in New Zealand once fully operational.

Opus’ team of architects brings congruent and applicable experience to the functional design requirements of contemporary Public Transport solutions. This project has included feasibility studies for 8-car train adaptability, future proofing for the electrification of the urban network and accommodation for integrated public transport electronic ticketing and a “closed system” of route interchange.

The Opus Architecture team have also provided reports and input to the procurement, construction sequencing, contract preparation and risk management assessment services. Our design services have incorporated CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) and consultation with disability advisors to ensure the safety and accessibility of the project is maximised. Currently, the station project Stage I and Stage II works are lodged for Building Consent and are being tendered out for construction.

Opus won an award for renderings of the station (see images to right) at a Revit Technology Conference recently held in Sydney.
